Understanding IVF: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the most effective assisted reproductive technologies (ART) available today. If you have been recommended IVF by your fertility specialist, it is natural to feel overwhelmed. This guide breaks down the entire process into simple, easy-to-understand steps so that you can approach your treatment with confidence and clarity.
What Is IVF?
IVF is a fertility treatment in which a woman's eggs are retrieved from her ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a specialized laboratory. The resulting embryo is then transferred into the uterus with the goal of achieving a successful pregnancy. IVF is recommended when other fertility treatments have not worked, or when the chances of natural conception are very low.
Step 1: Initial Consultation & Diagnosis
Your IVF journey begins with a thorough consultation at IVF CAFE Clinic. Your fertility specialist will review your medical history, conduct a physical examination, and order diagnostic tests including blood hormone levels (FSH, LH, AMH), antral follicle count via ultrasound, and semen analysis for your partner. This helps us design a personalized treatment protocol.
Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation
You will receive daily hormone injections (gonadotropins) for approximately 8–14 days to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. During this phase, your progress is monitored closely through regular ultrasound scans and blood tests to track follicle development and adjust medication doses as needed.
Step 3: Trigger Injection & Egg Retrieval
Once your follicles reach the ideal size, a trigger injection (hCG) is administered to mature the eggs. Egg retrieval takes place 34–36 hours later under light sedation. Using a fine needle guided by ultrasound, our embryologist carefully collects the eggs from each follicle. The procedure typically takes 15–20 minutes.
Step 4: Fertilization in the Laboratory
The retrieved eggs are combined with your partner's (or donor's) prepared sperm in our advanced IVF laboratory. Fertilization may occur through conventional insemination or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. Fertilization is confirmed after 16–18 hours.
Step 5: Embryo Development
Fertilized eggs develop into embryos over 3–5 days in a precisely controlled incubator. Our embryologists grade each embryo based on its quality and developmental stage. Blastocyst-stage embryos (Day 5) generally have the highest implantation potential.
Step 6: Embryo Transfer
The best-quality embryo is transferred into your uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. The procedure is gentle and typically painless — no anaesthesia is required. Remaining high-quality embryos can be frozen (vitrified) for future cycles.
Step 7: Pregnancy Test
Approximately 14 days after embryo transfer, a blood test (beta-hCG) confirms whether the treatment has been successful. If positive, you will begin early pregnancy monitoring with our team.
