ICSI vs IVF: Which Fertility Treatment Is Right for You?

When couples begin exploring assisted reproductive technology, two terms come up repeatedly: IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). While both treatments share several steps, they differ fundamentally in how fertilization is achieved. What Is IVF?

In conventional IVF, retrieved eggs and prepared sperm are placed together in a laboratory dish and left to fertilize naturally. The sperm swims to and penetrates the egg on its own. This method works well when sperm quality is normal and fertilization potential is good.

What Is ICSI?

ICSI is a more advanced form of IVF in which a single, carefully selected sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm (centre) of a mature egg using a microscopic needle. This bypasses the need for the sperm to penetrate the egg on its own — making it the treatment of choice when sperm quality or quantity is compromised.

Does ICSI Guarantee Fertilization?
